Zambia’s premier agricultural expo proved to be everything one had hoped for and more. The superbly well-organised event was a triumph, combining efficiency, practicality and a classy, functional layout.

Commercial farmers and agri-business made up the bulk of the first day’s visitors, but smallholders and traders swelled visitor numbers on the second day. The president addressed visitors to the expo inside ZNFU’s packed tent.The president drove this huge John Deere combine harvester from it’s parking space down to the ZNFU pavilion, much to the delight of the assembled crowd of Zambians.Farmers, at lunch, engaged in a robust discussion about how to handle the fall armyworm. These Ndola farmers have formed a co-op with roughly 70 members. Astute and hardworking, they use the power of the group to negotiate better prices and to trade.Michris Janse van Rensburg, South African maize and soya farmer, demonstrates his hand-held fertiliser over-sower to a group of Zambian farmers.The farmers light up as they realise the benefits of Michris’s machinery; increased planting areas, more labour time, less back-breaking manual labour, better fertiliser placement and increased yields.
