The new season of African Farming will not only introduce 13 new farmers to viewers, but also has a new presenter: me. Lindiwe Sithole, a seasoned presenter and aspiring farmer herself.
Sithole has been a presenter and producer of lifestyle programs at eNCA for many years and has interviewed several celebrities, including Tyler Perry, Usain Bolt, David Beckham, Black Coffee, Caster Semenya and Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa.
She decided to say goodbye to the entertainment industry because she wanted to tackle new things. Coincidentally she was talking to her mother about their plans to start farming again when she got the call with the offer to be the new producer of African Farming.
Lindiwe, from Evaton near Sebokeng in the south of Gauteng, knows farming. “I grew up on a farm where subsistence farming was practiced. My grandparents, Fana Patrick and Gladys Khathazile Sithole, owned a smallholding in Evaton where they kept ducks and chickens and grew vegetables and fruits. One of the apple trees bore the most sour apples I have ever tasted. I could never figure out what was wrong with the tree.”
The Sitholes didn’t have to buy vegetables or meat very often. Her grandmother also loved to bake and there was always more than enough to eat.
Getting up early on weekends to pull out weeds, water plants and feed the chickens is one of the memories that stayed with her. She and her mother are now looking for a piece of land to start a small farm. Her mother, a retired credit officer, will run the farm while Lindiwe continues her work and helps part-time.
She says she is very excited to present African Farming, especially as she and her mother are planning their careers in agriculture. “I am convinced that this was God’s plan!”
