Bosvelder ram achieves record price in Bela-Bela

A Bosvelder ram was sold for a record price of R95 000 at the Bosvelder Study Group’s elite auction. The auction took place at Warmbad Livestock Market in Bela-Bela.

The owner, Theo Hoffman of Hoffman Bosvelders in Middelburg (Mpumalanga), sold the record-priced ram to Voorwaarts Safaris of Isandovale. The four rams sold averaged R39 500.

The Bosvelder is a cross between the Bapedi, White Dorper and Van Rooy breeds, aiming to combine the best traits of these three indigenous breeds in a low-input, fat-tail field sheep suitable for the Bushveld with its heartwater challenges. 

Breeding is focused on hardiness, fertility, early sexual maturity, good milk production, heavy weaning lambs and parasite and disease resistance.

Four ewes were sold for an average of R9 875. The highest price of R16 500 was paid by Thienpont Bosvelders of Modimolle. The seller was Haakdoringkuil Bosvelders from Mookgopong.

Sixteen ewes with lambs averaged R12 094. The highest price of R16 000 was achieved by two ewes from Haakdoringkuil Bosvelders and Inni-Bos Bosvelders of Marble Hall. The buyers were Voorwaarts Safaris and Sudami 13 CC from Groblersdal.

Twenty-five pregnant ewes averaged R9 000. Three ewes achieved the highest price of R14 000 each. The buyers were Voorwaarts Safaris, Inni-Bos Bosvelders and Iricel Investments from Polokwane. The sellers were Thienpont Bosvelders, Rudette Nel Bosvelders from Thabazimbi and Haakdoringkuil Bosvelders.

Flock sheep

Flock sheep were also offered. In total, 52 pregnant ewes were sold for an average of R5 480. The highest price of R12 000 was achieved by a ewe from Voorwaarts Safaris purchased by Rhebokkloof Bosvelders from Thabazimbi.

Eight ewes with lambs averaged R6 375. The highest price of R10 000 was paid by De Meyer Farm, Onverwacht, for a ewe from Marken Bosvelders, Marken.

Eighteen ewes were sold for an average of R5 222. The highest price of R8 500 was paid by Voorwaarts Safaris for a ewe from Wolmar Bosvelders, Groblersdal.

Two pregnant ewes with lambs averaged R6 500, with the highest price of R9 000 paid by Voorwaarts Safaris to Thienpont Bosvelders.

Ten flock rams averaged R15 500. Two rams achieved the highest price of R23 000 each. The buyers were Iricel Investments and SP Janse van Rensburg, Baltimore, for rams from Inni-Bos Bosvelders and Vlakte Bosvelders.

Turnover totalled R1 218 000. The auction was conducted by Vleissentraal Bosveld and Stefan Greyling was the auctioneer.
