An outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) has been recorded in the Chavuma, Kabompo and Zambezi districts in the North Western Province, reported the Zambian National Broadcasting Corporation.

Government has since acquired vaccines for the disease.

According to Creavat Chituta of the National Agricultural Information Services, a team from the district and provincial office in the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, is attempting to contain the disease.

Meanwhile, government has delivered vaccines for cattle in the Nakonde District, confirmed Field Simwinga from the Nakonde District.

The disease broke out in the country’s Northern Province about a year ago in the and several outbreaks have also been recorded in 2017 in neighbouring countries like Malawi, Zimbabwe and in the FMD zones in Namibia, South Africa and Botswana.

During August there was already an estimated 28 000 head of cattle affected in the North Western province.
