A probe ordered by Zambian Minister of Lands Jean Kapata into the controversial sale of an entire chiefdom by a traditional leader has revealed alleged collusion. It is believed to involve government officials at the local council and ministry of lands, sources close to the investigation said.

The sources who spoke on condition of anonymity said the alleged collusion is widespread.

“The sale has created a lot of concern for the minister and the entire hierarchy of government, and initial findings show glaring anomalies that point to collusion among officers at various levels,” one source said.

According to the source, the probe is likely to be extended to include law enforcement agents, including the anti-corruption commission.

He said the investigation will be far-reaching and dovetailed with the ongoing review of land administration in Zambia.

The probe comes after a Mumbwa district chief sold 20 000 hectares of land to a foreign investor, displacing nearly 1 000 smallholder farmers.
