Minimum wage in the sector rises sharply

The Zambian Farm Employers Association (ZFEA) recently approved a 14.8% wage hike for farm workers.

The increase, effective from 1 November is subject to approval by the Ministry of Labour. Unions rejected an offer of 13,8% in October.

According to the Zambian National Farmers’ Union this increase applies to employees covered by the collective agreement between the ZFEA and its social partners, including the National Union of Plantation, Agricultural and Allied Workers, the Zambian Union of Sugar Industry, the Allied Workers and the Grains and Meat Workers Union of Zambia.

The approved increase is higher than the current Zambian inflation rate of 12.5% .
