Passion and knowledge can help you become successful

During the 11th episode of African Farming, the agricultural television show on Mzansi Wethu (channel 163), Sylvester Lubambo, Training and Development Manager at Lemang Agricultural Services, explained to the show’s host, Angie Khumalo, what a new-era farmer can do to become a successful commercial farmer.

Tshilidzi Matshidzula is an award-winning farmer who has a strong focus on mentorship for young farmers of the future. He’s also an adrenalin junkie who grew up on the streets of Thohoyandou in Limpopo, but today farms with his family in the Eastern Cape.

“Matshidzula is a young man doing phenomenally well. He is such an incredible human being, who not only wants to find success for himself, but also for other less-experienced farmers,” Khumalo said.

Matshidzula is big on mentorship, learning, and on imparting knowledge; very much like AFGRI’s Lemang Agricultural Services.
Lubambo said the first ingredient a farmer needs to become a successful dairy farmer, is a love for cattle.

“Secondly, he will need knowledge of dairy farming. That is very important, because bear in mind that Tshili’s business has many processes, which are all important.

“Another thing that is important, is knowing how to use modern technology. Technology helps you save money where it matters the most.

“For us at Lemang it is important to help you increase your knowledge so that your business is able to grow.

But mentorship also plays an integral part,” he emphasised.

“Mentorship is essential for those who go into business but do not know much about it. If you have a passion and even if you have studied, you should watch those who are more experienced at farming than you. Stick by them because there are some things you won’t learn in the classroom, or be told before going into business.

Take advantage of the knowledge more experienced farmers gained through their own trials and tribulations.

“It’s important that as your business grows, you have someone that you can bounce ideas from.”
