The sale of an island in Zambia with up to 1 000 inhabitants has sparked outrage among stakeholders who say the government must revoke the transaction.

This comes barely months after government overturned the controversial sale of an entire chiefdom.

“I have asked my counterpart at Ministry of Lands to investigate how the island on Lake Tanganyika in Mpulungu was sold to an investor. This is a dubious transaction that must be revoked forthwith and culprits brought to book,” Mpulungu Member of Parliament Freedom Sikazwe told local media.

Sikazwe said the sale of the island came to light after scores of inhabitants complained of harassment and intimidation from agents of the unnamed investor.

The latest incident has highlighted the complications around land administration in Zambia and stakeholders were calling for a ban on foreign land ownership and a revision of the existing land legislation.
