Zambian bean producers eye China for exports

Zambian bean producers in Muchinga Province have earmarked 3 000 hectares to grow beans as the area readies for the launch of a US$10 million plant.

Area traditional leader Mathias Mphande told local media exports of common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) to China and neighbouring countries will start next year.

“Beans only take 3 months so we will be in a position to grow and harvest it yearly. So, by the time the plant is up and running, we will have sufficient stocks,” said Chief Mphande.

According to him, in addition to the 3 000 hectares, there will be a number of outgrower schemes that will stretch as far as Northern and Luapula provinces.
