Zambian customs seize 22 Mukula-laden trucks

The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has seized 22 trucks carrying Mukula logs destined for South Africa.

ZRA Corporate Communications Manager Topsy Sikalanda said Zambia would have lost K6.6 million in taxes. “Out of the 22 trucks, 16 were intercepted at Chirundu Borderpost, as well as in Zimbabwe and in South Africa at Beitbridge. And all the drivers ran away,” Sikalanda said.

He said ZRA’s Elite’s Anti-smuggling Squad acted on a pubic tip-off to pursue the trucks that were reportedly headed for South Africa. The operation was conducted in collaboration with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA).

The 16 trucks intercepted at Chirundu and 3 at Beitbridge had been moved to Lusaka.

The seizure of the trucks came 2 days after the Zambian government reiterated the export moratorium is still in place, despite the partial lifting of the ban allowing local sawmillers to harvest and process Mukula logs within a radius of 100 km of concession areas.
