Small-scale farming implements at the biggest farming show in Africa

Here are a few agricultural implements for small-scale operations exhibited at the annual Nampo Harvest Day at Bothaville in South Africa. Prices are rounded-off and include Value Added Tax. Zambian Kwacha prices were calculated from the exchange rate at the time of publishing, and exclude any transport or export costs.

Erdvark Engineering designed the G15B-model for small tasks. It is handy for grading gravel roads and leveling any terrain. An assagay type planter from Eden Equipment for manual planting. The farmer jabs the sharp end into the soil with a firm push and it leaves a maize seed or any other seed in the hole. Price: R433 (K313)

This Haraka-planter from Eden Equipment is made to be pushed by hand. The rotating cylinder has pins that perforate the soil. A seed falls from a container into each hole. It allows the farmer to plant rapidly and to control the distance between seeds accurately. The seeds are planted 34 mm deep and 300 mm apart. Price: R3 760 (K2714).
