Watch: R600/kg Dormer-X carcass headlines Royal competition and auction

Two Eastern Cape sheep-farming brothers took some of the top honours in the prestigious Royal Carcass Competition and Auction on Monday evening. What’s more, they were able to cash in on their success by achieving top dollar for the winning lamb carcasses they produced.

A 29,68 kilogram Dormer-X carcass produced by Tjaart Steenekamp of 2 Broers Dormers in the Eastern Cape’s Barkly East district won the champion lamb carcass and champion European genetics lamb carcass categories with a score of 82,2%. It sold to OJ Trading of KwaZulu-Natal for a spectacular R600/kg.

Also in the carcass competition, 2 Broers Dormers produced the lamb reserve champion, European genetics reserve champion, the champion group of four lambs and the European genetics champion group of four lambs.

In the same competition, Ebrahim Sheik of Sheik Farm in KwaZulu-Natal’s Hammarsdale district produced an Ile de France that won lamb second reserve champion. 

Marius Eksteen of Hatari Dormers in the Free State’s Kopanong district produced the reserve champion group of four lambs, the European genetics group of four lambs and the second reserve champion group of four lambs.  

Not to be outdone by his brother, Steyn Steenekamp of Gras Karoo Dormers in the Eastern Cape’s Venterstad district produced a 32,4 kg Dormer-X carcass that won the champion super lamb category with a score of 79,5%. It sold for a hearty R360/kg, also to OJ Trading.

Gras Karoo Dormers also produced a Dormer-X that won reserve champion super lamb carcass. 

The carcass competition and auctions’ beef and pork categories also produced some excellent outcomes.

Ferrero Bonsmaras in the Free State’s Harrismith district won all four top positions in the beef carcass competition. Its biggest achievement was the 270 kg Bonsmara carcass (score 83%) that won the single champion beef carcass category. It sold for R100/kg to OJ Trading.

Antcara Piggery in KwaZulu-Natal’s Winterton district produced an 88,46 kg PIC (score 95,33%) that won the champion pork carcass category and that was also in the reserve champion group of pork carcasses. It sold for R50/kg to Kennedy Meats of KwaZulu-Natal.

Topigs carcasses produced by Butt Farming in KwaZulu-Natal’s Kamberg district won first reserve champion, champion group, second reserve champion and second reserve champion group.

In the category of pork carcasses produced by emerging farmers, a 74,11 kg PIC (score 78,54%) produced by Msizi Kheswa of Nathi Futhi Farm in KwaZulu-Natal’s Thornville district won champion carcass. It sold for R35/kg to Kennedy Meats.

A Large White carcass produced by Mfundo Mkhize of Eyamajobe Farming in KwaZulu-Natal’s Winterton district won first reserve champion pork carcass by emerging farmers.
