WATCH | Sussex bull fetches highest price at ProGen auction

A Sussex bull with exceptional breeding values secured the highest price at ProGen Sussex Group’s 15th production auction.

George Potgieter from Pothou Sussex reports that the bull, PSS 21 1602, was sold at the auction held on 29 August at Afridome in Parys for R145 000 to a commercial farm that wishes to remain anonymous.

ProGen Sussex Group comprises two Sussex studs: Blema ba Kan Sussex in Kroonstad and Pothou Sussex in Vredefort.

PSS 21 1602 is among the top ten Sussex bulls in terms of breeding value. Two stud breeders were the underbidders on the bull. “For us as sellers, this indicates the importance that commercial farmers place on breeding values,” says Potgieter.

He thanked all buyers for their support and said ProGen Sussex is satisfied with the auction results, given the challenging agricultural and economic conditions affecting the cattle industry.
